What Actually Happens During a Sacramento CCW Qualification?

If you’re applying for a Sacramento County CCW, the qualification shoot is usually the part people worry about most.

It shouldn’t be.

The shooting portion of a California CCW class is not a tactical competition. It’s a safety and competency check. You’ll shoot a prescribed course of fire at set distances. The focus is on safe handling, muzzle discipline, trigger control, and the ability to keep rounds within the scoring area of a standard silhouette target.

In Sacramento County and Placer County, the qualification typically involves shooting from short defensive distances. Distances from 1.5 yards (approximately 5ft), out to the maximum of 10 yards, which is easily thought of as two average sized cars parked along the street. There are no surprise scenarios. No sprinting. No drawing from a holster and certainly no trick stages or one handed reloads. You’ll fire a specific number of rounds per firearm you intend to list on your permit. Before the live fire begins, our instructors review safety rules and expectations clearly.

Most qualification issues aren’t about accuracy alone, its about feeling the need to rush. People speed up because they’re nervous. When students slow down, manage their breathing, and focus on fundamentals, the standard is very achievable.

The goal of qualification isn’t to prove you’re an absolute expert. It’s to confirm you can handle your firearm safely and place rounds responsibly. If you prepare even a little, especially with basic live fire or structured dry practice, you’ll be fine!

The process is straightforward, professional and measured. Like it should be.
