Thinking about applying for your Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit in Sacramento County? You've likely heard it's a complex process, but we're here to simplify it. The path is clearer than ever for law-abiding citizens.
Here’s a straightforward, three-step breakdown of the official process from start to finish, directly from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.
The Official Sacramento County CCW Process
The entire journey can be summarized in three key stages. Following them in order is the key to a smooth application.
Step 1: Apply Online & Pay Fees
This is where it all begins. You must start your application through the official Sacramento County online portal.
Where to Go: https://sacramentoca.permitium.com/ccw/start
What to Do: You will create an account and complete the digital application. Be prepared to provide all required personal details and documentation accurately.
The Fee: You will pay the non-refundable application fee online to submit your application.
You can expect to pay $600-$1,000 in Fees and costs, and about $300-$400 for a quality 16 Hour Initial CCW class depending on various factors. List of fees on the Sac County Sheriff Website.
Step 2: Schedule Your Interview & Live Scan
After your initial application is reviewed and you receive a notice to proceed, the next phase begins.
The Interview: You will schedule and attend an in-person interview with a CCW investigator. This is a standard part of the process to verify your information and intent.
Live Scan: You will be directed to complete a Live Scan (electronic fingerprinting) for a comprehensive federal and state background check.
This step is all about clearance. The Sheriff's Office needs to ensure you meet all legal requirements and have a clean background.
Step 3: Get Cleared & Take Your CCW Class
This is the most important step for us to help you with!
DO NOT TAKE YOUR CLASS EARLY. You must wait until you have received official clearance and an approval letter from the Sheriff's Office.
Why? Your CCW training certificate has a limited validity period (typically 90 days). Taking the class too early could mean your certificate expires before your permit is issued, forcing you to pay for and take the class again.
Once you have that green light from the Sheriff, it's time to build the real-world skills you need.
Your Final Step: Professional CCW Training
The state-mandated training isn't just a box to check—it's the foundation of your responsibility as a permit holder. Our CCW Class and 1-on-1 classes are designed to equip you with more than just the legal minimum.
We cover:
Firearm safety and handling
California & Federal laws regarding concealed carry
Mental Health Preparedness
Personal Protection inside and outside the home.
Holster draw and situational awareness
Upon successful completion of our 16 hour initial CCW class we provide the official training certificate you need to finalize your permit with the Sheriff's Office.
